EP. 4 — Mary Jane: why are these strap shoes called that?

EP. 4 — Mary Jane: perché le scarpe con il cinturino si chiamano così?

There are shoes that follow fashion trends.
And then there are shoes that cross more than a century without losing their charm.

The Mary Jane belongs precisely to this second category: elegant, feminine, and recognizable thanks to its characteristic strap across the instep.

But have you ever wondered why they are called Mary Janes?

The answer doesn't come from the world of fashion, but... from a comic strip.

It all starts in 1902 with a comic strip

The history of the Mary Jane begins in the United States in 1902, when cartoonist Richard Felton Outcault published the comic strip Buster Brown.

The protagonist was a lively and mischievous boy, always accompanied by his inseparable little sister: Mary Jane.

In the comic, Mary Jane almost always wore a simple shoe, with a rounded toe and a strap that crossed over the instep.

What was then simply her favorite style would become, in the following years, one of the most iconic shoe models in the history of fashion.

How the name "Mary Jane" was born

In the early twentieth century, an American shoe manufacturer obtained the rights to use the Buster Brown characters in their advertising campaigns.

The shoes worn by the character Mary Jane thus began to be advertised under her name.

The success was enormous.

As the years passed, the name Mary Jane ceased to refer only to that specific product and began to identify an entire category of shoes.

Even today, when one speaks of Mary Janes, one immediately thinks of a ballet flat or a low shoe characterized by the strap across the instep.

Why are Mary Janes still so loved?

There are styles that change continuously.
Mary Janes, however, have remained faithful to their identity.

The reason is simple: they manage to combine elegance, practicality, and comfort in an extremely versatile shoe.

In recent years they have returned to the spotlight thanks to reinterpretations by major fashion houses and contemporary brands, which offer them in many versions:

  • in velvet;
  • in leather;
  • with heels;
  • with wedges;
  • minimalist;
  • very colorful.

The detail, however, is always the same.

The strap across the instep.

It is precisely what makes them instantly recognizable after over a hundred years.

Mary Janes today: a classic that never goes out of style

Today, Mary Janes are worn in every season.

They are perfect with a pair of jeans, with a summer dress, with linen trousers, or with a more elegant look.

They are liked because they manage to be refined without feeling demanding, and they always add a touch of style, even to the simplest outfits.

It is the classic example of a shoe born over a century ago but still incredibly relevant.

A fun fact before we say goodbye

The next time you hear a Mary Jane mentioned, you will know that the name was not born in a factory or a fashion house.

It was born between the pages of a 1902 comic strip.

And since then, it has accompanied one of the most iconic models in footwear history.
